What is an American Barn?
An American barn or American-style barn is a large building used on farms and rural properties for agricultural and general storage. Although barn sheds are used mostly for agricultural purposes, they can also be used as storage sheds, offices, or event venues. Thanks to the increasing trend of farmhouse style of living, you can use your American barn as a practical solution for your country lifestyle.
Common Attributes of an American Barn
The following are common attributes of our American barns.
Mezzanine flooring - A mezzanine floor allows you to increase floor space or add storage capacity in your structure.
Steel sliding doors - Sliding doors are an attractive and functional solution that provide access points to your barn.
Split stable doors - Split horizontally in the centre, allowing the top and bottom sections to open and close independently.
Personal access doors - PA doors create an additional access point in your barn shed or steel structure.
Roof Ventilators - Add a roof ventilator to your barn to assist in keeping feed and animals cool and dry.
Common Uses for American Barns
Traditional barns were used for hay storage, animal housing, grain storage, machinery and equipment storage. In recent years we've seen an increasing number of barns being used for holiday accommodation, wedding and event venues, and even breweries (STCA).
The most common applications include:
Animal housing - It can be used for animal housing because they provide shelter from severe weather conditions and a safe place to raise young.
Grain storage - Barns offer great ventilation that helps with humidity control. They also provide easy access to equipment and supplies.
Machinery and equipment storage - The majority of barns include wide openings/doors that enable you to fit large machinery and equipment. They can have high ceilings, which allows you to raise your equipment higher for easier access.
Feeding areas - Barns are good for animal feeding areas because they offer protection from the elements and predators.
American Barn Stables
An American barn stable is a functional and versatile building design which is a great option for providing shelter for horses and other farm animals. Typically an American barn features a gable roof on the central bay, a distinct raised drop, symmetrical awnings, and multiple roller doors providing ample access points.
Our American barn stables can be fully customised to include internal wall dividers, tack rooms for storing equipment, supplies, and hay/feed, as well as separate grooming areas. American barn stables from Wide Span Sheds are the perfect option for those who want extra protection from rain, snow, cold air, and predators.

American Barn Design
American barns, also known as the traditional, classic or heritage barns were originally constructed from timber. Due to the Australian climate, most American barn sheds in Australia are now constructed from steel. What's unique about an American barn is that the centred bay is raised with a noticeable drop to symmetrical skillion roof outer bays. All American barns will have an open gable end.
